Humane Society’s new boarding and grooming facility opening soon

The Battlefords Humane Society (BHS) is getting ready to open its first-ever kennel facility.

Called BHS Boarding & Grooming, the centre will be open to the public on Dec. 10 and 11 when people will be able to visit and have a look.

The facility is located just on the northern outskirts of North Battleford, off Highway 4.

“We want to open the doors and have people see it,” said Laurel Fauth, Battlefords Humane Society board treasurer. “We are open for business, but we are planning to do a grand opening in the spring.”

BHS Boarding and Grooming has started taking appointments, for anyone wanting to use its services for their cats and dogs in the future.

To make a booking, people can call 306-317-8883 or 306-317-8882. They can also send an email to: bhs.boardingandgrooming@gmail.com

The facility is also looking for more staff, both part-time and full-time.

Fauth said it’s great to have the boarding kennel facility now done.

“It’s a beautiful building,” she said. “And we want to make it more beautiful, to get our stuff in. The construction is all done. So it’s a lot of work. It’s a big undertaking, and it’s very exciting.”

The kennel can accommodate from six to 10 cats, and over 20 dogs, each with its own unit. The cats will be in a separate area so they will not be disturbed by the dogs.

The facility is heated for the winter and has air conditioning for the summer.

“We have toys; we have a daycare play area and three fenced yards for outside,” Fauth said.

The kennel was being built to raise funds to help support the planned new shelter that will be built later.

“The whole idea of this kennel is to provide extra income to support the [new] shelter,” Fauth said.

The boarding and grooming facility is a separate building, located beside the site where the Humane Society’s new animal shelter will be built in the future.

Plans for new animal shelter

Fauth said the Humane Society has a goal to build the new animal shelter later next year and is still fundraising for that project.

“It will need more funding in the future to operate with a new building whenever it’s built,” she said.

That’s why the kennel business was so important to get off the ground, “to provide that extra income for the shelter to operate.”
