Resort residents and weekenders stranded due to flooded road

A resort just north of the RM of Big River is the site of some stranded summer enthusiasts.

The Delaronde Resort has become isolated due to flood waters from the north washing out the only road in or out.
Debbie Anderson, a permanent resident in the resort said that many people need to get out.

“There’s people out here with cars that have to get back to Saskatoon to work,” said Anderson. “They can’t get through.”

She added that one woman attempted to make the driver through the flooded road and ripped the oil panel off her car.

Anderson said that crews from the RM of Big River were supposed to start working on the road last week.

“They told us on Tuesday that it would take them 3-4 days to fix it,” said Anderson. “Well they haven’t been out there working on it, Friday,

Saturday, Sunday, Monday we haven’t seen anybody. They just left us stranded out here.”

She said that the RM had a large meeting Tuesday informing all residents and cabin owners on the resort that the road would be shut down for three to four days while work was completed on it.

“They got partway done and just quit on Thursday and we haven’t seen them since,” said Anderson, adding the water has since gotten higher.

She said that there’s now about 30 inches of water over the road from several creeks draining into Delaronde Lake.

Anderson said that she’s heard through others on the resort that the RM would start working on the road again on Tuesday.

“Nobodies phoned, nobody has told us anything, we just kind of hear from other people,” said Anderson.

She said the residents told the RM to build the road up three years ago because of flooding issues and nothing was done.

Anderson estimates there are at least 15 families living permanently on the resort as well as various cabin owners who are stranded at the moment.

The Big River RM office has said through a news statement released Monday afternoon that work was ceased on Friday due to bad weather.

The report states that work continued on Monday as the weather improved which involved putting additional gravel on the road surface.

Work will continue tomorrow at 7 a.m. depending on the weather according to the RM and the road will remain closed during this time.
