Developing: Riders say change of head coach, general manager necessary for success

The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ high expectations were not being met by its head coach and general manager, leading to the club’s decision to let both Corey Chamblin and Brendan Taman go.

Riders President and CEO Craig Reynolds spoke to the media Tuesday morning to address the team’s decision Monday night.

“These are never easy decisions or changes, but these changes were necessary for us to move forward on our vision of sustained success on the field.”

Reynolds said a number of factors went into the decision to let both men go. Reynolds says the team is in a results-orientated business and as general manager, Taman has a share of the responsibility of the Riders 0 and 9 season.

Reynolds commended Chamblin and Taman’s legacy, saying both played a major role on the team’s 2013 Grey Cup win.

“They are both true professionals and will be very successful in the future.”

Taking over as interim head coach is special teams coordinator Bob Dyce, while assistant general manger Jeremy O’Day takes over as interim general manager.

One of his first questions Dyce got from the media was who he would start at quarterback Sunday when the Riders face the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Labour Day Classic. After saying Brett Smith will get the start, he said it was humbling to make that decision as the interim head coach.

“That (the club) considered me to lead what I and many believe to be the preeminent franchise in this league, (I’m) definitely humbled and thankful,” Dyce said.
