Crop report: Dry weather allows for greater harvesting headway

Harvesting conditions in the Northeast are still reported as quite wet, but a dry and windy week allowed producers across the province to make significant progress.

Saskatchewan-wide, 60 per cent of the 2016 crop was combined and 28 per cent swathed. This is on-par with the five-year average at 62 per cent.

Prince Albert and area kept pace with the province as 54 per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up significantly from 33 per cent last week.

Cropland moisture conditions are very favourable as only 16 per cent rates as surplus and 84 per cent rates as adequate. Pasture conditions fair similarly as 11 per cent rate excellent, 80 per cent rate good, eight per cent rate fair and only one per cent rate poor.

While harvesting conditions were mostly encouraging, rain on Sunday in Nipawin, Star City, Humboldt, Kinistino and Garrick — as high as 22 mm — slowed progress down.

Most crop damage this past week is attributed to wet weather. An ongoing theme in the Northeast, field conditions remain wet and equipment continues to get stuck. Some durum and wheat crops are being downgraded due to fusarium, or fungi.
