Producers making hay in this week’s crop report

Livestock producers have certainly been making hay so far this season.

According to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s latest crop report, 50 per cent of the hay crop has been baled already or put in to silage so far this season, with another 20 per cent cut and ready for bailing.

The five-year average for this time of year is 55 per cent baled.

The wet and humid weather has done a number on the hay quality so far with 70 per cent of the crop rated as good.

Hay is slow to dry in the swath with unseasonal rain and high humidity.

Across the board, crops are generally in good condition with 62 per cent of spring wheat, winter wheat, flax and canola rated as good.

Wet conditions in the lentil-producing regions had an impact on quality. Lentils so far are rated at 47 per cent good, while peas are listed at 52 per cent good.

Harvesting of winter wheat, peas and lentils in some areas is expected start in the coming week. Most farmers are busy haying and getting ready for harvest.
