Saskatchewan producers see increase in seeded crop

As of May 2, Saskatchewan producers have 15 per cent of the 2016 crop seeded, thanks to the dry and warm stretch of weather.

This percentage is significantly ahead from the five-year average of only four per cent in the previous year, so producers have been able to get into the field much earlier than previous years.

Shannon Friesen, cropping management specialist for the ministry of agriculture, said this time last year, some producers were in the field but others were not expecting to get outside for another week or more.

“Soil temperatures are warming up quickly, so producers are able to get out there and get a lot of acres done in a short amount of time,” Friesen said.
