Regina archbishop says pope visit possible within next 2 years

The leader of the world’s estimated 1.2 billion Catholics could be coming to Saskatchewan in the next few years.

Archbishop of Regina Don Bolen told 650 CKOM in an email that Pope Francis can’t make it to the province in 2017.

However, Bolen wrote the pontiff would consider an invitation to visit in either 2018 or 2019.

Bolen has been working on getting the pope to come to Saskatchewan to deliver a formal apology for the Catholic church’s role in Canada’s residential school system.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park near Saskatoon has been put forward as a possible site for the apology.
