Battleford street to close for school project

Battleford will be a looking a little less sombre for an afternoon next month when a group of students step out to stop traffic while they make a dance video.

Town of Battleford council agreed at its last meeting to close traffic at the intersection between 1st Avenue and 2nd Avenue at 22nd Street, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., on Tuesday, May 2, while the students work on their school project to create and film a dance video.

The street will be closed from the crosswalk in front of the bank at the location in the centre part of town, to the Post Office building.

Two schools are taking part in the project – Bready and Battleford Central elementary schools.

Battleford Central School vice-principal Jim Ellis said in his letter to council, the aim of the project, essentially, is to educate young people how to stay healthy, and avoid getting involved in potentially abusive relationships.

The schools are involved with two partners on the project – the Kids First program in Battlefords, promoted by Prairie North Health Region, and the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club.

“We hope that students will recognize they can make a positive difference in our schools, community and our world,” said Ellis in his letter.

The project is aimed for Grade 5 and 6 students, as part of the program called “Youth Rising,” that is modelled on the “One Billion Rising” campaign. The goal is to promote healthy lifestyles.
