The annual Earth Day Clean-up in North Battleford is yielding less total garbage each year which is a great sign for the city but, administrators feel the community can still do more to reduce litter.

Since the April 20 clean up tradition began four years ago, the total weight of litter picked up dropped significantly. In 2015 the total weight of garbage picked up by the city was 4,095 kg which saw a 50 per cent drop compared to this year, which yielded 1,985 kg.

City manager Jim Puffalt who was out picking up garbage during the Earth Day Cleanup said even though the numbers are declining there is still a lot the community can do to help.

“The people who throw litter out of their vehicles just don’t realize what it is doing to the environment and what it makes the community look like,” Puffalt said. “It’s not necessarily frustrating because these things happen but when people are throwing stuff out the window on purpose it causes a lot of problems for us.”
