Carpenter High’s first annual Colour Run a vibrant success

A colourful jaunt around Lion’s Park will hopefully be the kickstart to a new fund which will support students at Carpenter High.

The school’s inaugural Colour Run took place on May 25, and organizer Judy Waites said that she was thrilled with the amount of support from the community. A total of 130 Meadow Lakers were showered with a rainbow of colours for a good cause.

“We were overwhelmed,” she said. “We didn’t expect that for the first year so we were really happy with it.”

She said the idea came from the school community council (SCC).

“We have a great SCC this year, and we really like to get people active,” Waites said. “It’s something that people can do as a family, and we thought it would be something fun to try, and these events seem to be really popular.”

The money raised from this endeavour is going to help establish a small fund to support students who might need financial boosts from time to time.

“It will help feed students who come without lunches or for students, let’s say, whose families don’t have the money for a ski trip,” Waites said. “We don’t want anyone to not be able to participate in these things because their families are going through hard times. It’s usually just a temporary thing for the family, but nobody should ever have to sit out from these things.”

She said the rain and windy weather didn’t put a damper on the event.

“There were no complaints,” she said. “Everyone came out with smiles and good attitudes – really terrific.”

She said the run really seemed to go over well, and the community is looking forward to it becoming a yearly occurrence. A finally fundraising tally hasn’t been done yet, but Waites said it’s looking like it will be around the $2,000 mark.

“Everybody was so thankful,” Waites said. “It was a learning process for us this year as well. Every time we do something in the school, the community supports it 100 per cent – business community and participants – we’re just so grateful for that.”
