Another busy year expected for M.L. Stampede Week

A colourful parade, bull riding, calf-roping, barrel racing, and so much more. The 97th annual Stampede Week is starting today, and will include a host of events for folks to take in at the Meadow Lake and District Arena.

Leighton Wood is the president of the Meadow Lake Stampede Association, and said that after months of planning and preparation, things are ready to go and the committee is looking forward to a great week.

“Planning starts about October,” he said. “We work in conjunction with 4-H and lots of local sponsors, it’s quite the community event. Set up went quite well, we got the dirt in between rains.”

The event started today with 4-H Beef Club Achievement Day, and Wood said despite the rainy weather, the kick-off parade is still on.

“The parade is going rain or shine,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve gotten a lot of phone calls about that. As for the rest of the week, Thursday night we have our bull riding which is always a great event. We’ll have the big screen, so that adds to our show. [On] Friday and Saturday night we have even more rodeo events, hope to see people there.”

He said for the various events, there will be participants from across Canada and the world.

Wood noted that Stampede Week has a long-standing tradition in the community, and the committee is looking forward to celebrating 100 years of the event, just a mere three years away.

“We’re coming up on the 100th,” he said. “We want to make the event bigger better, and do something to celebrate that fact and are always looking for ideas to do so.”

Information on this week’s happenings can be found on the Meadow Lake Indoor Rodeo Facebook page.
