Relay organizers remain positive despite gloomy forecast

Organizers of the 2017 Canadian Cancer Society Battlefords Relay for Life aren’t letting a little rain put a damper on their spirits.

The forecast for tonight and overnight includes showers and possible thunderstorms, but Registration Chair Amanda Maunula said the team is ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at them.

“We will be fine,” Maunula said. “Considering what cancer patients and survivors go through everyday what’s a little bad weather during an event like this?”

Tonight’s 12-hour Relay for Life begins tonight at the City Track at Centennial Park and everyone is invited to join in the celebration.

“We will be celebrating with survivors tonight and of course remembering those who lost their fight with cancer,” Maunula said.

As of noon today, 15 teams had registered for the Relay for Life with 89 participants and 93 survivors also in attendance.

“The Survivor Walk kicks off the evening followed by the opening ceremonies, Maunula added. “There will be games, entertainment and even a few people will be getting their head shaved, so it should be a fun filled but emotional evening.”

The Battlefords Relay of Life has raised more than $1.5 million for the Canadian Cancer Society since it began hosting the event in 2002.

This year’s fundraising goal was $15,000, however there was a buzz around the Centennial Park during preparations that they have raised much more.

“We will just have to wait and see.”
