A call to the bar

The Battleford Court of Queen’s Bench inducted 13 new lawyers Friday afternoon.

The ceremony for swearing law students into the profession is known as a call to the bar, or call to the profession, which requires several years of hard work to officially become a lawyer.

Andrew Clements was one of the 13 inductees who had several hurdles to jump in order to get to the ceremony.

“[The ceremony] is special to all of us,” Clements said. “[We] have worked so hard to become a member of the profession.”

For Clements, he first obtained his undergraduate degree. Following, he attended law school, took an article under a senior Crown for a year, wrote the bar exam and attended the bar course before receiving the call.

Preparation just for the bar exam took Clements about four months, but he feels all his hard work has paid off.

“I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer,” he said. “I’ve always looked up to the profession; the ability to see that justice is done and represent people.”

Now that Clements has completed his call to the bar, he plans on continuing his work as a Crown prosecutor in Saskatchewan for the entirety of his career.
