Quebec police suspect double murder-suicide in slayings at nudist campsite

SAINTE-BRIGITTE-DES-SAULTS, Que. — The deaths of a 50-year-old woman and two men in their 70s at a Quebec nudist campsite appear to have been a double murder followed by a suicide that stemmed from a love triangle, provincial police said Tuesday.

The victims were identified as Suzanne Gareau, Rodrigue Tremblay, 77, and Denys Carpentier, 76.

Police said they suspect Carpentier killed the other two before taking his own life, with investigators working on the theory jealousy over a broken relationship was the likely motive.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon at the Adam and Eve campsite in Sainte-Brigitte-des-Saults, 125 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The cause of death has not been released but authorities have said the bodies bore signs of violence.

Sgt. Ingrid Asselin said police received a call Monday about three bodies inside a home on a campground.

Asselin says autopsies in the coming days will determine the cause and time of death.

A woman who knew the victims told Radio-Canada, the CBC’s French-language network, that Tremblay had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Carole Dussault said Gareau and Tremblay had only recently started going out together and that she had moved in with him until she could find a new home.

“She was a good person too,” said Dussault. “But Rodrigue was more than a good person. He was an elderly man with a big heart and he helped everyone he loved.

“That’s why it’s so very sad, that an event like this could have taken place.”
