Sox look to halt losing skid against Blue Jays

The Meadow Lake Sox will be looking to get back in the win column tonight, but it won’t be easy.

Meadow Lake is on the road against the Smithson Division leading Border City Blue Jays at Wallace Field in Lloydminster at 7:30 p.m.

After opening the 2017 North Saskatchewan River Baseball League season with four wins in their first five games the Sox have dropped their last three games while Border City boasts a 5-1 record so far in the young season.

According to co-coach Craig Weran the Sox need to start swinging the bat if they want to have success against the Jays.

“We need to hit the ball and play better defensively,” Weran said.” We’ve struggled in our last three games to string together hits and score runs which we were able to do the first five games of the year.”

The Sox have scored just seven runs in the last three contests despite having the third best team batting average in the league (.338) behind Border City (.355) and the Battleford Trappers (.360).

Keeping the Jays off the base-paths will also be vital for the Sox who will send Kevin Gerwing to the mound tonight. Gerwing had some issues in his last game lead but picked up the win despite giving up four runs in five innings and issuing seven walks.

“We’ve actually pitched well in the last three games,” Gerwing added. “Our guys haven’t given up a ton of runs. We just haven’t scored enough runs to win a senior baseball league game so that is our focus tonight.”

The Sox return to Meadow Lake Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest with the Edam Blue Sox who are coming off their first win of the season on Tuesday night against Midwest.
