Man accused in Pelican Narrows murder appears without lawyer

A young Pelican Narrows man charged with murder appeared in a Prince Albert courtroom this morning representing himself.

Curtis Joel Michel, 20, is facing a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the June 10 death of 32-year-old Dale Custer. RCMP were called to a local home for a complaint of an injured male at 9:15 p.m. where they discovered Custer. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Michel was arrested without incident June 12 at the Pelican Narrows RCMP detachment.

The incident is still under investigation by the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit and Forensic Identification Section, along with the Office of the Chief Coroner.

This morning Michel appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court over video link from the nearby correctional centre. Michel appeared relaxed throughout his appearance, leaning back in his chair and casually resting his head against the wall.
