Proving to students there really is no such thing as a disability, local law enforcement agencies come out en masse to support Special Olympians.

Representatives from a number of outlets including city police, RCMP and Corrections participated in this year’s annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“We felt it was important that the students can see hands on what these athletes are like,” Stephen Hug said, the chair of the Prince Albert and District Law Enforcement Torch Run. “We do lots of talks at the hot dog sales too, today it’s just to get out and run around with the students.”

Hug said the torch relay stretches between nine schools in Prince Albert and Red Wing School to the north. A total of $3,000 was collected amongst all the schools through a series of hot dog lunches.

The organization has raised roughly $40,000 this year. Hug said this year’s total is on the high end of the spectrum in terms of donations gathered over the last 30 years.

Money raised in Prince Albert will be sent to the provincial Special Olympics organization, which goes towards equipment, transportation and training of athletes.

The Prince Albert police are heavily involved in the run and participates in fundraising activities including an annual police golf tournament. The Special Olympics Saskatchewan Provincial Summer Games were held in Moose Jaw between June 16 and 18.
