Abused, burned kittens put down

The kittens which were taken in by the Prince Albert SPCA last month after facing abuse have died.

The shelter said the kittens started to lose ground recently, becoming lethargic and losing weight. After numerous visits to veterinarians, two were diagnosed with feline leukaemia. This pair was put down while the other two died of natural causes.

A fifth kitten was taken to another shelter and also died of natural causes.

“It is a very sad ending,” Operations Manager Liana Maloney said. “Everybody worked really hard and we are pretty heart broken about it. They had a rough start, but we did everything we could for them.”

In mid-May, the SPCA received the abused kittens for treatment, two of which had been lit on fire. They were brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who witnessed a group of children tossing the kittens into the air.

The person approached the children and managed to coax one of the kittens away and quickly brought it to the SPCA. Bylaw officers and animal protection officers managed to track the kids down later and get three more kittens.

The children, according to Maloney, have been found and the SPCA, local fire, police and family services are working with the family.

“They are trying to at least help them out and break the cycle and see what we can do to make sure nothing like this happens again,” she said.

The kittens were about a week and a half old at the time.
