Carpenter High School (CHS) teacher Kendra Paramchuk has been recognized for her contributions to high school sports in the province.

Late last week, she was awarded with the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) Service Award.

She was nominated in April by colleagues in the northwest district, and she said she was incredibly honoured to receive the accolade.

“It’s very humbling,” she said. “You sometimes get busy with your seasons and you don’t realize there are people out there recognizing you. It’s touching too, because I’m finishing up my four years on the SHSHAA executive.”

Upon moving to Meadow Lake several years ago, Paramchuk taught at Jonas Samson before transferring to Carpenter High. Throughout her career, she has coached basketball, curling and track and field. She is the currently the athletics director at CHS, and has guided the boys’ basketball and curling teams to provincial nods in the past.

For the past four years, she has served on the SHSAA executive as the women’s representative.

“I was the women’s voice on the executive,” she said.  “I planned two Women in Sport conferences at the U of S, we just finish the second one this past June. Four years went quite quickly but it was one of those rewarding experiences, it’s all volunteer, you get to meet a lot people throughout the province.”

The Women in Sport conference that took place earlier this month had a strong Meadow Lake contingent in attendance, with ten female students from Jonas Samson Junior High and eight from CHS.

“It was nice to see the rural students get a chance to try some new things,” she said. “They did everything from learning powwow dancing, to cheerleading, motivational speaking nutrition, body image sessions, it was neat.”

While her time on the provincial body has come to an end, she will still be involved regionally as the Vice President of the North West High School Athletics Association.
