It’s been a positive season for two chuckwagon drivers from the region.

Wayne Knight and Ray Mitsuing say they’re both feeling pretty good heading into Meadow Lake’s races this coming weekend, July 28-30.

Knight, who is from St. Walburg is currently sitting in first place in the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) standings with a total of 653.5. Loon Lake’s Mitsuing is sitting in third with 589. Rounding out the top five are Jamie Laboucane also from St. Walburg with 585 and B.J. Carey from Meadow Lake with a score of 572.5.

Meadow Lake is set to host the annual event at the Stampede Grounds this coming weekend, and both men said that they’re looking forward to racing in front of regional fans.

“My seasons been going pretty well so far,” Mitsuing said. “I’m coming back into contention for the year end here, and I’m looking forward to racing in Meadow Lake.”

He said his team tries to rest in between the weekly events, and he is pushing to stay in one of the top spots in the CPCA.

“We’ve been training new horses which can be tricky,” he said. “But everything’s coming together as we planned. We’re going to be resting this week, no training happening at all. Try and get and stay in the top four.”

He said he’s looking forward to the local crowd at the Meadow Lake event.

“[Many of] my fans come from the area,” Mitsuing said. “It’s always been a great race.

Knight said he also looks forward to competing close to home, adding that his season has been positive thus far.

“Been fortunate enough to qualify for the dashes,” he said. “I won in Wainwright, it’s a big rodeo town, nice to win there.”

The races officially kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. On Friday night at 5 p.m., there will be an interactive driver and outrider introduction taking place.
