M.L. Fire Department adds new truck to fleet

The Meadow Lake Fire Department has added a new shiny red engine to their fire department.

The new Fort Garry model fire truck has replaced the city’s retired 1987 engine. Meadow Lake Fire Chief Neil Marsh said the new truck is a very welcome addition to the city.

“We now have two engines that are in really good shape and very dependable,” he said. “Now we’re back up to full capacity in Meadow Lake and the surrounding area.”

He said newer fire engines have a lot of features which make firefighting safer and more effective.

“The way the compartments are set up make it easier to get access to tools,” Marsh said. “We can get at hose beds safer than previous models, and inside the pump house the controls are all electronic. As well, the built-in foam system gives us the best use of what is sometimes scarce water, and of course the new engine is equipped with the latest safety features that any new vehicle would have.”

The addition of the new truck will make things much run smoother for the current crew of 22 volunteer fire fighters. Marsh said he is always looking to recruit new members for the department, who train regularly.

“We do 120 to 130 calls in a year,” he said. “It’s enough to keep things interesting, but not overloading anybody. So if there’s men or women with the interest and an ability to serve their community in a very rewarding way, they should come check us out.”

He said he owes a great deal of credit to the current members of the department, their employers and families.

“Other than me, everyone has another day job around the community that they have to be able to leave when there’s an emergency,” Marsh said. “By that gesture alone, the employers are making a big contribution to our community and it’s much appreciated. And of course families have to deal interrupted sleep and birthday parties when our firefighters are dashing out the door.”
