Wild weather wraps up holiday weekend

It will be a Saskatchewan Day holiday that many won’t soon forget in the Battlefords and area.

Late Monday afternoon a severe thunderstorm warning was issued by Environment Canada and brought an unexpected hailstorm around 4:00 p.m. dropping pea-sized pellets on the area for roughly 20 minutes.

Environment Canada said an upper level disturbance interacted with a cold front that was tracking southward through central Saskatchewan triggering strong thunderstorms throughout the west central parts of the province.

The thunderstorm warning was changed to a severe thunderstorm watch by 6 p.m. then downgraded later in the evening. The intense rain caused minor flooding in some areas which lasted temporarily then quickly drained once the rain stopped.

The same cannot be said for the city of Warman as the suppertime storm rolled through the city bringing strong winds, hail and heavy rain. The downpour lasted roughly 30 minutes and dropped over three inches of rain.

Streets and intersections were flooded and cars were seen driving through areas of water up to the bumpers while city crews had to deal with downed trees and branches. Some people even kayaked down city streets yesterday.

Other areas like Maymont reported nickel-sized hail in the area while Rabbit Lake received quarter-sized hail as well.

Saskatoon was also hit with the same intense thunderstorms giving 10 to 15 mm of rain to the area and 65 km/h winds which caused power outages throughout the city.

There were no reported power outages overnight in the Battlefords area overnight however some areas of Warman were left without electricity for a few hours because of downed branches and trees.
