Young local athletes will get the opportunity to learn football skills from former Saskatchewan Roughrider, Don Narcisse.

The CFL Hall-of-Famer played for the Riders for 13 years and was the leading wide receiver in the CFL during the 90s. He will be hosting a youth football camp in Prince Albert on Aug. 27.

“The reason why it’s so important to me is because I never went to a football camp when I was a kid,” he said. “The one thing that I wanted to do was to give back to the kids”

Narcisse said apart from practicing football, the purpose of the camp is to teach young athletes skills that will help them become successful in both their lives and future careers.

He said the number one thing he learned playing football is “to work hard” and hopes to translate that into his camp.

“Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard,” he said.

Narcisse started playing football professionally in college. At 21-years-old, he was selected for the CFL during a two-day Roughrider camp. He was one of a only a handful of players chosen out of 400.

“If I couldn’t have went to the camp, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today,” he said.

This will be the seventh year Narcisse has organized football camps across the province. Other cities hosting the camp include Moosomin, Saskatoon, Regina, Melville, Yorkton, and Tisdale.

He said Roughrider alumni and current players will also be helping out at the camp, but hasn’t confirmed who yet.

The one-day camp will be held at the Max Clunie field and is open to children ages seven to 18. Food and signed t-shirts will be provided.
