Volleyball players get muddy in Vawn

People in Vawn weren’t afraid to get dirty as the town came together to host a mud volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon.

This is the first time the community has organized the tournament in roughly 17 years after Brandon Doom and Becky Carr decided to bring it back.

“I never got to participate when it happened because I was too young,” Doom said. “We have some youth in the community who wanted to do some stuff [though], so we decided to organize it.”

Five teams registered for the tournament, which ran alongside a list of events that included kids activities, beer gardens, and a 50/50 draw to help fund upgrades to Vawn’s park and hall.

A free shuttle service was also offered to take attendees home to deter drinking and driving.

Despite other festivities such as Those Were the Days, Cochin Days and chuckwagon races in Turtleford happening at the same time, Doom was happy with how many people attended and helped with the event.

“Everybody in Vawn came together to upgrade the park [for the event]; painting, installing our picnic tables and benches and installing the mud pit,” he said. “The firefighters brought the water as well…it’s nice to be from a small town where everybody works together for a common goal.”

Doom said he plans to organize the event again next summer and hopes to attract more out of town teams.
