As the dust settled on Brad Wall’s retirement news, one question is set to dominate the political landscape: who will be the next premier of Saskatchewan?

There are plenty of names already being suggested, many of them current MLAs and ministers.

“I’m giving it significant consideration,” confirmed Jeremy Harrison, minister of the economy. “I’ve a young family we are going to have to have significant discussions there, it really isn’t a decision that anyone can take lightly.”

Kevin Doherty, the current finance minister, wouldn’t confirm or deny a run, but echoed Harrison that it is not an easy decision to make.

“Those are big decision to make,” Doherty said. “One ought to take the appropriate time to consult with those closest to them and see if that is the appropriate time to do this or not.”

In a written statement, Health Minister Jim Reiter, stated that he has received a number of calls encouraging him to run for leader.

“Over the coming weeks, I will be taking time with my family and close friends to seriously consider my candidacy, and to ensure that the decision I make is in the best interest of my family, our party, and the bright future of the province of Saskatchewan,” Reiter wrote.

Gord Wyant, the justice minister, is another name that comes up frequently.Tina Beaudry-Mellor, Ken Cheveldayoff and Alanna Koch, the woman who currently serves as deputy minister to the premier and the top civil servant job in Saskatchewan, have also been penned as possible contenders.

Only Donna Harpauer, Lyle Stewart and Don Morgan have confirmed they will not be seeking the job.

All asked are adamant, whoever chooses to run, will have big shoes to fill.
