Northwest Territorial Days parade celebrates milestones

Battlefords residents are invited to attend the 130th anniversary of a local tradition, and the country’s 150th birthday.

The Northwest Territorial Days exhibition launches with the parade Tuesday night.

“It’s our 130th annual parade. We’ve been around for a long time,” Jocelyn Ritchie said, general manager of Battlefords Agricultural Society.

Ritchie estimated roughly 40 floats, and a number of antique vehicles will participate in the parade. Entries include the North Battleford City Kinsmen band and Indigenous singers and drummers.

Spectators may notice “a little bit more” in this year’s parade to celebrate the important milestones, like a birthday cake float constructed by the agricultural society.

Prior to the parade, judges will select their favourite entries. They will also present a plaque to the entry that best represents the Canada 150 theme.

Because of downtown construction, the parade will take on a slightly different route. It will start at the Civic Centre, travel along 19th Ave. to 100th St., then to 13th Ave. and 102nd St. before returning to the Civic Centre.

The Northwest Territorial Days exhibition runs Aug. 16 to 18. The parade takes place Tuesday night, starting at 7 p.m.
