Changes to transit routing, times begin next month

After three weeks of debate and the project once on the verge of defeat, council finally climbed on board with transit changes set to roll out next month.

In a special council meeting Monday evening, members voted 6-1 to grant approval to a number of route changes and a three-month trial of extended hours.

Coun. Dennis Ogrodnick reiterated his opposition from a meeting previous to the service cuts in Crescent Acres.

“I have had a number of people thank me and I also had one caller say ‘Ogrodnick, you are wrong, let that route be abolished’…but a number of people in the Crescent Acres are not happy,” he said.

This section only ran at rush hour and saw roughly 10 riders, according to the city’s transportation and traffic manager.

The special meeting was called after the issue turned contentious. Last week council questioned the removal and relocation of stops while others, in an effort to further attract ridership, wanted to see other routes added. Mayor Greg Dionne vented his frustrated with council’s change in direction in, what he called, “the eleventh hour.”

The changes come after an extensive public transit consultation. Routes and stops have changed in the hopes of improving service. A number of new buses are expected to arrive in December and will accommodate both overflow issues and wheelchairs and strollers.

Riders can expect to see signs on new, removed or changed stops. Route maps and other advertising will also be used to highlight changes.

The transportation department will review the extended hour trial after its completion to review the changes.
