Octagonal building used for storage

A historical Prince Albert landmark is currently being used for storage.

The Octagonal building was built in 1905 to display agricultural goods during the annual Exhibition. It is the only one left of its kind in Saskatchewan.

Linda Grimard, president of the P.A. Exhibition Association wanted to apply for a grant to renovate the building. However, she said it’s in “pretty good condition” and other projects are currently more pressing.

“There’s lots of things to be done around here so it’s not top priority for us right now,” she said.

She said the repair costs are unclear, and the association would first need an expert to assess the building and itemize what needs to be repaired. Grimard hoped the upgrades are completed five years from now.

Last November, the RiverXingNorth-Prince Albert Model Railroaders moved out of the building after using it for four and a half years. President of the club, Brian Randall, said they moved their club to the Optimist Centre due to costs.

“We’re at a warmer building that’s for sure. Actually what we have is a lot better than what we had before,” he said.

Randall said he hoped the building can be restored back to its original splendor, but was skeptical. He worried the building would deteriorate if it wasn’t used.

He also said he’d like to see the old steam engine sitting outside the building restored. The train was given to the city in the 1960s.

“It’s just sitting there under the weather rusting away,” he said. “It’s rusting away to nothing”
