A volleyball camp taking place this week is set to give Meadow Lake’s budding volleyballers the skills they need to learn to master the game.

The Future Stars Volleyball Camp for boys and girls ranging in Grade 1 to 6 started on Monday Aug. 14 and concludes today.

Trent Marsh is one of the main organizers and coaches at the camp, and said it’s a way for younger kids to learn the basics of the sport.

“They develop their skills, but it’s more about instilling having fun with volleyball,” he said. “They’ll learning the big three – passing with their forearms, setting, and spiking, as well as serving. And then we do a little bit of defensive stuff as well digging the ball, spiking, diving and things, and blocking.”

He said the camp involves several drills, but also lots of opportunities for all kids enrolled to get a chance to sharpen their skills in actual game play.

“We get them to play a game called triple ball,” Marsh said. “It’s like volleyball, but everyone gets an opportunity to play. If the team has a really good server, this way you’re always changing the servers on both sides and you’re having an opportunity to play free ball.”

He said while skill-building is important for sport, it also acts as a confidence booster for kids.

“The biggest thing right now, is to get them to have fun and experience some level of success so that when they do get to the junior high or high school level they have the confidence in themselves to play to be competitive,” Marsh said.  “Also it’s something for kids to do in the summer. Physical activity is important. It’s nice to get them out and exposed to a variety of different things.”
