Some families in Prince Albert will have a sticky surprise in their food hamper this month’s thanks to a generous community donation.

One-hundred and twenty jars of peanut butter were gifted to the Prince Albert Food Bank Monday from members of CUPE to help sweeten breakfasts and lunches for the school year.

The idea was spearheaded by Coun. Charlene Miller who, as a health care worker, approached her union to help out. Peanut butter was selected for its high nutritional and protein values.

“It is very important that kids get the nutritious stuff they need,” Miller said. “The kids are going back to school and it is very important for them for developing and learning in school to have a full belly.”

CUPE fronted $500 to purchase the goods at cost from Giant Tiger.

“We deal with health care and it is important to help families with nutrition,” Ashlea Tyacke, vice president of CUPE said. “We are more than happy to help out with all the families who use the food bank.”

The bank was in need of a donation this size as traffic typically spikes in traffic, operations manager Kerry Ramsdell said adding dry goods including pasta and cereals are prioritized, so when the organization receives a special item donation, it is greatly appreciated. Ramsdell said the peanut butter jars will likely be gone in a matter of days.

“We can put it into the family hampers and it will feed 120 families. Just help them out with breakfast or if the kids want to use it for lunch,” Ramsdell said. “Kids will be happy. When they get jam or honey, kids are pretty happy.”
