North West College to open new off-site facility

Next week North West College will celebrate the opening of a new building next Tuesday to help train an additional 100 students.

The college is getting back to its roots, naming the new building the Mistikwa Centre, which was the original name of the college when it was founded in 1975. Mistikwa is Cree for “cluster of growing trees.”

The new facility will teach mechanics, electrical, and essential skills for the work place, while providing a temporary solution for the college’s issue with overcrowding.

According to the college, they train 2,600 students annually and the main campus constantly exceeds its capacity.

North West has leased the new building for one year, said president and CEO of the college, Tavia Laliberte. She added she is excited to bring the colleges off-site programs under one roof.

“We realize this is a temporary solution to our spatial constraints, but the college appreciates the opportunity to create efficiencies by gathering these programs together for our students. They can develop a sense of community and draw on student supports that are more challenging to create in piecemeal locations across the city. Mistikwa Centre improves our ability to serve our students.”

The new facility will be officially opened on Sep. 12 at 1 p.m. and is located at 2022, 102nd St.
