Organizers of a community-wide career fair led by Meadow Lake Tribal Council (MLTC) are hoping their event can set attendees down a new, and exciting path.

The Discover Your Future career fair is in its third year, and is taking place at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre on Thursday, Oct. 5.

Organizer and MLTC Career and Guidance Coordinator Jody Bender said there are currently 42 exhibitors signed up for the fair, including colleges, universities, and businesses. Bender said the event hoped to add a try-a-trade tent this year.

“Exhibitors are very receptive to [the career fair] because they’ve been there in the past,” she said. “We have quite a few new ones signed up, but a lot are returners [who] thought it was beneficial and a good event.”

The event is open to the whole community, and students in Grades 7 to 12 in all nine MLTC schools, Northwest School Division Schools, graduates from both systems, and those still looking for a career path are expressly invited to attend.

Bender said the event in a one-stop-shop for those looking for a career path, because the exhibitors are on-hand in person to answer any questions directly.

“It’s also [for them] to know that there are supports out there, there is help for whatever they choose to do.” she said.

MLTC Superintendent of Education Tanis Crawford said an emphasis has been placed on creating an interactive event. She said this career fair used to be held later in the year, but thought it was important to start career planning earlier.

“It is to give some motivation, ideas, and big dreams, hopes and aspirations. To say ‘here are all the different avenues I can explore, and here’s my support network to help get me there,’” she said.
