Sask. Rivers Schools enrolment continues to increase

Total enrolment continues to increase in the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD).

Director of Education Robert Bratvold said the district is up 43 students over last year.

“As of the cut-off date of Sept. 29 we have our fifth straight year of enrolment increases at 9,157 pre-K (Kindergarten) to 12 students,” Bratvold said.

While official census figures indicate only a small increase in the general population Bratvold said those stats don’t reflect growth in the city.

“We’re seeing some increases particularly in early years learning which is a demonstration of demographic changes but also that families are trusting SRPSD as the place for excellence in early learning,” he said.

Pre-kindergarten to kindergarten figures have moved up from 958 in 2012 to 1,065 this year, a jump of 107 over five years.

Meanwhile there has been a net loss of Grade 10 students over five years: from 682 in 2012 to 669 this year, which Bratvold said is caused by demographic shifts.

French immersion is up 171 students over the period.

Bratvold noted a decline in enrolment in the Learning with Purpose and Won Ska programs. Those are for older learners experiencing significant vulnerability and life barriers. But Bratvold figures the decline in numbers may have something to do with those students remaining at high school.

“Our high schools have done a lot of great work in connecting and supporting those kids with lots of barriers so they no longer feel the need necessarily to move into a specialized program,” he said.
