M.L. Fire Department hosting open house this month

Meadow Lake’s 22-person strong volunteer Fire Department is looking forward to their upcoming open house, taking place Tuesday, Oct. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Fire Chief Neil Marsh said the public is invited to stop by the fire hall, at 116 Second St. E. to ask questions, take a tour, and participate in various activities.

“People can have a look at the new truck, we’ll have something on kitchen fires, extinguisher demonstrations and a few other things,” he said. “It’s always fun to show people around the fire hall and give people an idea of what it is we do.”

The various members of the department are trained not only as firefighters but also have some medical training as first responders.

“We’re trained for a lot of different qualifications,” Marsh said. “We attend everything from vehicle collisions, hazardous material spills, fires of all kinds, rescues. Whatever type of emergency there is, with a few exceptions, we’re likely to be there.”

Marsh said the event is expected to be both exciting and educational for all community members that choose to come by.

“Fire service is a community effort,” he said. “The more people know about what we do, the better. Maybe people might be inspired to join and help out in other ways.”

He said the fire department is hoping to have a representative from the provincial 911 dispatch centre stop by for the event as well.

The event is also promoting awareness for Fire Prevention Week 2017. This year’s theme is Every Second Counts! Plan Two Ways Out encouraging the public to always have a fire escape plan.
