The owner of a popular downtown men’s wear shop was honoured last night with a lifetime member award from the Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce.

Fred Matheson, owner of Ted Matheson Men’s Wear, was awarded for his services to both the chamber of commerce and the community as a whole at the chamber’s annual Chairman’s Night. In addition to serving as a board member for five years, Matheson’s store has been a staple of Prince Albert’s downtown for nearly a century. First opened in 1929 by Matheson’s grandfather Ted, Fred took over the business in 1986 after he finished university.

Matheson told paNOW people are the secret to his success, and he has always received strong support from family and friends, as well as his staff and the entire community.

“I’m not the only reason why this business is successful. I have good people that help me,” Matheson said. “You have to be surrounded by good people.”

Matheson said Prince Albert is a great place to do business, as the city is uniquely positioned to serve a huge surrounding area.

“The business climate here is really good,” he said. “The proof is in the pudding. We’ve been successful for 88 years.”

Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce CEO Larry Fladager congratulated Matheson on his success as a staple of the downtown landscape. Fladager said it’s becoming much less common for locally-owned family businesses to last as long as Matheson’s has.

“It’s a story that’s very rare these days. The business landscape is changing; the stores are getting bigger, they’re not owned locally anymore,” Fladager said.

“These businesses that have been in this community as long as Matheson, they’re rare.”
