Northland Power is the latest to sign on as a Saskatchewan Winter Games sponsor.

On Tuesday morning, they announced a $40,000 diamond-level commitment and will be sponsoring the games lounge.

“We would like to thank the committee for giving us a chance to support the 2018 games as a diamond sponsor,” Newman Matchim said at the announcement, who is the operations manager at the North Battleford generating station. “We like to support athletes and young people. Young people are always the future of any town. They bring so much energy and excitement.”

Also on hand, all the way from Northland Power’s head office in Toronto, was Calvin MacCormack, the facilities and operations manager for the company as a whole.

He said although Northland Power is now an international company, they are proudly Canadian, having started out in a small Ontario town similar in size to North Battleford. The company has been in North Battleford since 2010, and has a contract in place until 2033.

“As long term owners and operators of our facilities, we make it a priority to invest in our host communities because they are our communities too,” MacCormack said. “We were particularly excited to sponsor the games because they align very closely with our values: respect, committment, collaboration, having fun, pursuit of excellence.

“We look forward to seeing the athletes personify those very same values through the games.”

The Northland Power Games Centre, which will be located at the Western Development Museum, will be a place for people in the community to relax and visit in a comfortable environment. It will be open from 4-10 p.m. from Feb. 19 to 23, and will have food, a bonfire, entertainment, activities such as sleigh rides and dancing, and a kids corner.

“Northland Power has always been a big supporter in the community,” Rob Rongve, co-chair of the games committee, added in a press release. “We are thrilled that we could attach their name to the Games Centre. It’s going to be a very exciting venue filled with lots of great entertainment.”

According to the press release, admission to the Northland Power Games Centre will be free to all volunteers as a thank you for their efforts. A full event schedule will be made publicly available, once confirmed.
