When collecting proceeds from the local poppy campaign this year, members of the Meadow Lake Legion will be one box short after a theft occurred at 7-11 last weekend.

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Nov. 4, a male wearing a white winter coat, dark hat emblazoned with white initials ‘TS’, and sunglasses entered the convenience store and stole the poppy donation box.

Chris Brownrigg, a member of the local legion, said it was incredibly sad to hear the news, as donations go to support local veterans and like-minded organizations.

“Of course it’s disappointing that it occurred,” he said. “Fortunately for the perpetrator, he lives in a country where he’s considered innocent until proven guilty, and that’s one of the [many] freedoms our veterans fought and died for, and I hope he appreciates that. He didn’t steal the Poppies, because they’re free, he stole donations that were intended for veterans and their families.”
