Holly Berry a community tradition in Meadow Lake

The yearly craft fair called the Holly Berry is set to make attendees merry, according to event organizers from the Meadow Lake chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Beta president Laurel Pethick said the long-standing community event has become a holiday-time staple since its inception over 15 years ago.

This year, she said there are over 90 vendors and 16 home-based businesses that will be selling their wares, with a few new ones joining on this year, and many repeat visitors.

“We appreciate them all coming that’s for sure,” she said. “A good portion of them come right here from Meadow Lake, so that’s also good to see that we have so many talented and hardworking people that come out and join for this special day.”

Pethick attributes the event’s popularity to its local flavour, and the opportunity it provides for attendees to get all their Christmas shopping done in one place, on one day, with unique finds. There’s everything from food, to woodworking to art, to jewelry. About 1,500 to 2,000 people attend the event each year.

“It makes it easier for the community,” Pethick said. “It’s also been here for so long people look forward to it.”

Beta Sigma Phi accepts the booth registrations and also organizes the event. The money raised from table rental and admission to the event goes back into the organization’s coffers, which in turn helps them support other causes in the community.

“It’s all put back into the community,” Pethick said. “For example, we just got finished providing just about a whole new palliative care room at the hospital. We supplied two beautiful reclining chairs — a day bed so the family can stay there. The room was painted and redecorated.”

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 25 at the Meadow Lake arena from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
