City of M.L. asks SaskEnergy to update bills to reflect change

SaskEnergy bills will soon look a little bit different for residents of Meadow Lake.

In the wake of budget cuts and changes this past spring, SaskEnergy changed the grant program the company used to offer to various municipalities. Instead of going to cities and towns, the money now goes directly the Government of Saskatchewan.

Mayor Gary Vidal said city council sent a letter to Minister Joe Hargrave, who is responsible for SaskEnergy asking why this had not yet been changed to reflect the shift and cancellation of the Grants-in-Lieu program.

“If you look at a SaskEnergy bill, it shows there’s a municipal payment that goes to the City of Meadow Lake, and that’s not money that we actually get anymore,” Vidal said. “We just asked them if they could take that off of their billing process. If a taxpayer looks at their bill and sees the money is going to the city when in fact it isn’t, we don’t think that’s an appropriate way to represent that.”
