Weekend power outages planned in P.A.

SaskPower will perform some work in Prince Albert over the weekend, which requires scheduled power outages in several parts of the city and surrounding rural areas.

“SaskPower is performing some system upgrades requested by the city,” spokesperson Jordan Jackle said. “We’re going to need to shut off the power to a couple of areas, one on Saturday and another on Sunday.”

The Saturday outage, which will run between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. will affect roughly 500 customers east of Sunshine Rd. between the river and Highway 3, Jackle said. The area is largely residential, he noted, and the Cornerstone shopping district will not be affected.

Jackle said the purpose of the Saturday outage is to increase the power supply to the Cooke Municipal Golf Course, which will require some underground line replacement.

Sunday’s outage will run from 9 a.m. to noon, Jackle said, and will impact roughly 250 customers in Prince Albert’s south-central area. Customers between Central Ave. and Second Ave. W. will be affected, he said, as far north as 19th St. and as far south as 30th, but excluding the area immediately south of Kinsmen Park.

“The city has asked us to provide some more power to a water storage reservoir,” he said. “We do need to have this outage to connect it to the system.”

It is always difficult to schedule planned outages, Jackle said, as there are many factors that must be considered. Schools must have power during the week, he said, while many are doing their shopping on weekends as the holidays approach.

“It is kind of a balancing act,” he said. “We do try to mitigate impacts to our customers as much as we can.”
