P.A. newspaper ‘not going anywhere’

The Prince Albert Daily Herald newspaper has printed a strongly worded article in which it dismisses rumours it is shutting down.

Since its sister paper the Moose Jaw Times-Herald announced it would be closing, the Herald has heard from many people asking when they too would be closing their doors.

Editor Peter Lozinski told paNOW that is not going to happen.

“We’ve had a lot of people calling us, and some people in the community when we go out to stories, saying ‘oh, we heard you’re closing’ and that’s just not true,” he said.

Lozinski and publisher Donna Pfiel wrote a message in their Nov. 29 edition which in part reads:

Unfortunately there are some in this community who would gladly see the Prince Albert Herald come to an end. Some may be propagating these rumours in the hope that it accelerates what they see as our inevitable demise. We hate to disappoint those people, but the demise they see in our immediate future isn’t there.

Lozinski said the closure of the Moose Jaw newspaper, which happens next week, would not affect them from an operational point of view.

The Herald employs ten full-time staff, plus carriers and people working in the mail room.

Asked how important it was for the Herald to remain part of the media landscape in Prince Albert, Lozinski said communities can die when there isn’t diversity.

“I think it’s really important not just in media, but for any business. Having more than one outlet means they push each other. Having just one or two outlets means we lose competition and there’s a tendency to possibly become a little bit more complacent,” he said.

Earlier this month The Moose Jaw Times-Herald announced it would publish its last edition on Dec. 7. It has run since 1889.

The Herald has been around since 1894, almost 130 years.
