Festival of Lights cancelled, switched to one-day Winter Wonderland festival

A fundraiser for Multiworks is going to look a little different than the organization’s initial vision, but the event’s planners are feeling positive about their new idea.

Originally, a Festival of Lights was set to take place from Nov. 23 to Dec. 23 in Meadow Lake’s Lion’s Park, where local groups and individuals could decorate stations in the campground with holiday light displays. However, a number of community members were worried about vandalism given this summer’s number of incidents, so the event was cancelled.

It will be replaced with a one-day event with events taking place at the museum and in the park, including pictures with Santa, silent auction, horse-drawn sleighs and dog sleds, crafts and a bonfire set to take place Saturday, Dec. 9 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Louise Slater, program coordinator at Multiworks, said the overall response to the Festival of Lights idea was positive, but the vandalism concerns were a recurring response during the promotion of the event.

“We had to pull back on that because we just weren’t getting the response for people to volunteer to help out,” she said. “We still think having stuff in the park is a wonderful idea, and we still wanted to do family oriented activity, so that’s how Saturday’s event came about.

She said the interest level in the festival has been picking up quickly, and has hopes that the organization can build on this year’s success.

“The goal is, maybe if this day is successful, maybe in a couple years we can revisit the idea of the Festival of Lights again,” Slater. “Hopefully at some point it can happen.”

The fundraiser is to raise monies towards equipment and furnishings for the new Multiworks building.
