Two people attempting to steal a vehicle from a work site approximately 5 kilometres east of North Battleford Friday were stopped by witnesses after they got stuck while attempting to flee.

The incident occurred shortly after noon on Dec. 8 along Highway 40.

A 32-year-old male and a 37-year-old female both from Alberta attempted to escape the scene after they were interrupted by several witnesses during their attempted vehicle theft.

While attempting to escape in a vehicle, the male suspect became stuck in a ditch. The female also had to abandon a separate vehicle in her flee attempt after it became stuck in the snow.

She is also alleged to have attempted to strike one of the witnesses with the vehicle, but they were able to get out of the way unharmed.

The male was arrested by officers upon their arrival as he was held down by one of the witnesses.  The female fled through some yards and fields on foot but was also tracked down with the assistance of several witnesses and taken into custody.

The vehicle the suspects used to travel to the scene was found to have been stolen from Alberta.

Both are charged with vehicle theft and possession of stolen property. The woman is also charged with dangerous driving. Both were also arrested on warrants out of the Swift Current area in connection with several stolen vehicles from earlier this summer.

Each will appear in North Battleford provincial court Monday.
