This year’s Meadow Lake Business Excellence (MLBEX) awards take place on March 21, but nominations have officially opened.

Meadow Lake Chamber of Commerce administrator Adriane Ouellette and the board have been busy preparing for the event. She hopes the community will nominate several businesses and individuals for the six categories. They include: community builder, Aboriginal business of the year, small business of the year, business of the year, volunteer of the year, and customer service.

“We’re hoping to get lots of nominations,” she said. “The forms are available on our website, Facebook, and several local businesses, and can be dropped off at Cogent, Extra Foods and the First Nations Bank and also our office. I’m hoping people will take the nomination forms home, consider their choices.”

The community builder award recognizes distinguished role models in the community. Any business of five employees and up is eligible for the business of the year award, while businesses with five employees or less can qualify for the small business of the year nod, and can be either home or office based. The Aboriginal business award must be tied to an Aboriginal person or company. The volunteer award recognition rewards active community involvement, while the customer service celebrates exemplary customer care.

Once the all the nominations are received, and the businesses and individuals accept the nominations, a committee of the chamber will tabulate the highest numbers and choose the top three. Then an independent panel of three to five judges will review the applications and make the final decision.

Ouellette said this is an important step to make sure the choices are impartial, and she said she is in the midst of recruiting people from a cross-section of the community to assist.

“I’d like to have three to five people,” she said. “I’d like to include a senior this year if I can, but would like a mix of people from the community.”

The gala awards will take place at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre.
