NWSD hosts wellness challenge for staff

A bingo-style wellness challenge hopes to promote healthy living for staff members at the Northwest School Division (NWSD).

The challenge started last year, and the objective is to complete as many of the personal wellness, healthy eating and exercise tasks as possible. Teachers, bus drivers and support staff are all taking part

Kaitlin Harman, NWSD Communications Officer, said the initiative is supposed to encourage a well-rounded lifestyle.

“There’s everything from trying a new hobby, or sharing a healthy snack with your staff, go for a walk with your family,” she said. “People also get bonus points for sharing what they’re doing on social media. It makes it interactive and fun. It was really positive last year, and we got a lot of great feedback about it so it’s something we want to continue to do.”

She said the timing of the project is really positive as well, as the new semester is changing over.

“In the dead of winter, it can be hard to find motivation sometimes,” Harman said. “This is a good way to make sure people are taking care of themselves and promote a healthy lifestyle for our staff.”

Another helpful facet of the challenge is that it sets a positive example for students as well, Harman said.

“Last year, they incorporated some mini-challenges with the student population,” she said. “It’s nice to see the staff taking that leadership.”

The challenge started Feb. 1, and concludes Feb. 16, and can be tracked on social media following the hashtag #nwsdfit.
