New multi-use trail opens

Trail organizers have blazed a new path at St. Cyr Trails East of Meadow Lake.

The organization that works to maintain the area, the St. Cyr Trails Club, started working on adding the new nine-kilometre long multi-season trail last year, which makes for a total of six paths in the park area.

Peter Schalm, president of the club, said the group worked with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport, with grants from the City of Meadow Lake and Sask. Lotteries. The trail was previously a seven-and-a-half kilometre long trail, but could only be used as a winter trail as it included traversing a lake.

“Our current network was a half-kilometre, one-kilometre, two-kilometre, three and five-kilometre trails,” he said. “The new nine-kilometre now is all-season, which makes it perfect for hiking, running and cycling, as well as skiing. We’re very excited because now it opens up a lot more of the park for anyone to use at any time.”

Schalm said the idea originally started with a plan to include maps at the park as some users of the area were having trouble navigating. The plan soon snowballed into an expansion of the park to make it all-season. New maps were added to the area two weeks ago.

“The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport provided their expertise to actually design the maps and had them printed for us,” Schalm said. “The relationship we have with them has been very strong and we’ve been happy for all the help they’ve given us.”

The St. Cyr Trails Club is a local collective of members that work to upkeep the trails, with grooming, signs and they also encourage people to use the park to enjoy nature and get outside all year long. They collect yearly dues that finance the maintenance and also create cross-country ski trails at the Meadow Lake Golf Course.
