Manslaughter charges dropped against youth in McCallum death

Feb 6, 2018 | 6:00 PM

As a result of new evidence in the shooting death of 17-year-old Kegan McCallum in Nov. 2017, manslaughter charges were stayed for the 15-year-old male who was arrested in the incident.

McCallum died in hospital after being fatally shot in a home on the city’s west side the morning of Nov. 13, 2017. Three days later, the youth was arrested in North Battleford and has been in custody ever since. The name of the teen cannot be released due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

According to prosecutor Andrew Clements, Crown no longer has a reasonable likelihood of conviction against the teen. However, the youth is still facing three other charges in connection with the incident and is accused of possessing a prohibited firearm, concealing evidence, and providing false information.

There is a publication ban on the facts shared in the show cause hearing which took place on Monday, Feb. 5, as per the request of defence counsel.
