NWSD staff feeling optimistic after government funding boost

While he’s still unsure of the exact outcome it will have locally, Duane Hauk, the director of education for Northwest School Division (NWSD) said he was pleased to hear some provincial government funding was restored earlier this week.

Newly-elected Premier Scott Moe announced an increase to mid-school year funding of $7.5 million which will be dispersed among Saskatchewan school divisions to assist in dealing with front-line educational pressures. Moe added he will guarantee a $30 million investment in education within the upcoming 2018-2019 budget.

“Anytime we get some additional funding, whether it’s mid-year or any point in the year, we’re always pleased with that,” Hauk said.

He said the initial news was very positive, but the division staff and board members have some work to do to determine what the money will translate to for NWSD.

“We’ll look at some of those pressure points that we had when we formalized our budget last year,” Hauk said. “We’re looking at trying to do what’s best for our students, and that seems to be different needs across the division. For example, our counselling services. We have them in place already, but anything we can look at for improving those resources, we do.”

Hauk said he will be presenting the information about NWSD’s allocation at the next board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 15.

“They will need to look at this and make some decisions as to what they can do,” he said. “There will likely be a short turnaround with this, given the fact we have roughly five months of school left.”
