P.A. love story lasts six decades

When it comes to advice on love, Harold and Shirley Dickson have a few pointers. The couple has been married for 67 years.

“You have to find an understanding wife and a forgiving wife, for one thing,” Harold joked when asked about the secret to their long-lasting relationship.

The Dickson’s were married in 1950, two years after they met at a church skating party. Harold said he admired the way Shirley looked, but he didn’t realize she was the one until after a few dates.

“I think it was the second or third time we dated I thought ‘hey, this has gotta be it,’” he said with a laugh.

Shirley recalled the couple’s first date, and said Harold made a very good first impression.

“He sorta tapped on the door like a musical tap, and we both love music and we both played guitar, so I liked that,” she said.

After looking at the couple’s picture, one might assume the past 67 years has played out like a Hollywood love story, though Harold admitted they have had one or two arguments along the way.

“And once in a while I have to confess she’s right,” he said, “but not always.”

Every year the couple has a tradition of going out for dinner on Valentine’s Day. On Tuesday morning, Harold even surprised his wife with a bouquet of roses. Shirley said she has a hard time getting her mind around how long she and Harold have been together.

“The time has slipped by, but every day is new and we enjoy every day and we’re thankful every day we are still together,” she said.
