Coldest Night of the Year 2018

Have you wondered what it’s like to be homeless and hungry in the city this time of year?

Prince Albert residents can have a taste of that experience Saturday at the annual Coldest Night of the Year community fundraising walk, with proceeds going to Prince Albert Community Meals Inc. While the forecast suggests Saturday night will be warmer than recent days, the significance of the occasion will not be lost on the participants.

“It gives an opportunity for citizens of Prince Albert to come out together, join in the walk, and experience the sort of temperatures the homeless have to endure,” organizer Rory Swenson told paNOW.

There are three evening walks of various distances scheduled, all starting at St Mary High School at 5 p.m. Swenson said the shorter, 2 km walk goes to the museum and back on the Rotary Trail, the 5km walk goes to Riverside School and back, and the longest, 10 km walk repeats that route twice. The funds raised go towards P.A. Community Meals Inc. to support their ongoing efforts to feed the hungry, homeless and less-fortunate. The non-profit organization feeds more than 200 local men, women and children each week.
